Trucking Compliance Calendar: IFTA, Form 2290, UCR and USDOT
Your company calendar depends on its accounts, vehicles and operations. IFTA follows quarters, Form 2290 depends on first use, UCR covers a registration year and USDOT updates follow a biennial schedule. Track each obligation separately rather than applying one annual deadline to every truck.
In this guide
1. Identify the obligations that apply
Collect account numbers, credentials, vehicles and agency notices. Record your IFTA/IRP base, each taxable vehicle's first-use month, UCR year and last USDOT update. Add your own plate, insurance and permit expirations, which do not necessarily fall on December 31.
Completion check: one row per obligation with owner, reporting period, deadline and expected evidence. Keep filing, payment and renewal separate.
2. Match the deadline to the program
| Program | Reference schedule | Check |
|---|---|---|
| IFTA | April 30, July 31, October 31, January 31 | NJ moves weekends/legal holidays to the next business day. |
| Form 2290 | Generally, end of the month after first use | Check tax period and IRS exceptions. |
| UCR | Annual registration | Verify opening and selected year; 2027 opens October 1, 2026. |
| USDOT | Biennial schedule | Last digit sets month; next-to-last sets even/odd year. |
For NJ IFTA Q3 2026, the nominal October 31 deadline falls on Saturday. Under the state's next-business-day rule it moves to Monday, November 2, 2026, subject to any special agency notice.
3. Calculate Form 2290 timing by vehicle
August is not every truck's deadline. July first use generally leads to the end of August; another first-use month leads to a different filing date. The tax period runs July through June. Retain VIN, first use, taxable gross weight, accepted Schedule 1 and payment or suspension evidence. See our Form 2290 guide.
4. Set reminders and verify completion
- Set an internal review date before the agency deadline.
- Request missing records and assign a preparer.
- Verify acceptance and payment processing.
- Save the receipt under its account and period.
- Update reminders when vehicles, routes or accounts change.
Completion check: evidence for each obligation, rather than a completed reminder alone.
5. Resolve late filings from the account record
Review actual account status, missing periods and unpaid balances. Follow the agency's correction or reinstatement instructions. Penalties are program-specific; there is no universal fine for every weigh-station visit. An idle account is not necessarily closed. If credentials are suspended, verify reinstatement before operating.
Frequently asked questions
Is IFTA always due on October 31?
No. October 31 is the reference deadline for July, August and September operations; it is not every quarter's deadline or the license renewal date. New Jersey moves a Saturday, Sunday or legal holiday to the next business day.
Actual calendar example: October 31, 2026 falls on Saturday. NJ's rule moves the Q3 2026 deadline to Monday, November 2, 2026, unless an agency notice provides otherwise. Complete the return and any required payment on time.
A different quarter: January–March operations have an April 30 reference deadline. Do not wait until October to report them. Check NJ MVC's official schedule.
Does a USDOT update renew UCR?
No. Updating USDOT information with FMCSA and completing annual UCR registration are separate transactions.
Illustrative example: a company updates its address and truck count through MCS-150 in October 2026. That does not complete or pay its 2027 UCR registration. If covered by UCR, it must review and complete that year separately.
Completion check: retain the FMCSA update confirmation and separately verify UCR status and receipt for the correct year. One does not prove completion of the other.
Does this calendar include every deadline?
No. It covers IFTA, Form 2290, UCR and USDOT updates. Add your own insurance, plate, driver and permit dates.
Illustrative example: an NJ company has insurance expiring May 15, IRP credentials expiring June 30 and a driver's medical certification expiring August 10. All three belong on its calendar even if IFTA returns are current.
These example dates are not universal deadlines. Use dates from the actual policy, credential and driver records. Add applicable NY or CT account returns and renewals when those operations apply.
